Summer in the Algarve

3 min readThe First Edition

Festivals, local celebrations and open-air events that shape summer here, and the ones worth planning around.

There’s a different energy to the Algarve in the evenings. As the heat softens, towns begin to fill, music carries through the streets, and long dinners turn into late nights without much planning at all. Alongside the beach days and slow afternoons, it’s these moments — festivals, local celebrations, and open-air events — that shape summer here. If you’re here over the coming months, these are the ones we’d plan around. AFG RECOMMENDS Festival Med — Loulé (June) Music, food, and atmosphere woven through the streets of Loulé. One of the Algarve’s most loved events — busy, vibrant, and best enjoyed as the sun goes down. Olhão Seafood Festival — Olhão (August) Fresh seafood, long tables, live music, and a waterfront setting that comes alive at night. As good for families as it is for an evening out. Silves Medieval Fair — Silves (July/August) The town transforms completely. Expect crowds, a full immersive feel, and an atmosphere that’s at its best after dark. FESTIVALS WORTH PLANNING FOR Castro Marim Medieval Days (August) Set around the castle, this feels more traditional and slightly less commercial — a strong alternative to the larger fairs. FATACIL — Lagoa (August) A very Portuguese summer fair — food, music, shopping, and entertainment all in one place. Lively, busy, and great for all ages. Black & White Night — Carvoeiro (June) A one-night event with music, entertainment, and a great atmosphere throughout the town. Expect a crowd — and lean into it. FAMILY DAYS THAT ALWAYS WORK Zoomarine — Albufeira A full day out with shows, water areas, and beach space. An easy, reliable option with younger children. Slide & Splash / Aqualand Classic Algarve waterparks. Busy during peak season, but fun, simple, and perfect for high-heat days. SUMMER EVENINGS & LIVE MUSIC Noites de Verão (Various Locations) Free concerts and cultural events across towns including Faro, Tavira, and Loulé. Often low-key — often some of the best evenings. Sunset Sessions (Various Beach Locations) Relaxed evenings with DJs, live music, and dining by the sea. Not always widely advertised — worth keeping an eye out locally. No Solo Agua in Vilamoura is worth a visit, Agua beach club is also a favourite for live music. Vale Do Lobo’s Picnic in the Park is on every friday through the season, 6 weeks of evening bouncy castles, live music, local food and good vobes, this is a well known local favourite, keep an eve on VDL instagram for dates and any cancellations. LOCAL GEMS Village “Festas” Almost every town hosts one. Food, music, and a strong local feel — less polished, but often the most memorable nights. EDITOR’S PICK If you only do one thing this summer… An evening at Festival Med or the Olhão Seafood Festival captures exactly what summer in the Algarve is about. KNOW BEFORE YOU GO • August is peak season — expect crowds • Evenings are always the best time to go • Parking can be limited — arrive early or plan ahead • Many events don’t feel organised — that’s part of the charm • Some of the best nights happen when you least expect them This is summer in the Algarve — not just where to go, but when to be there.
