Ombria: A Different Side of the Algarve
Quieter, greener and far removed from the coast, a stay at Viceroy at Ombria.
There are plenty of luxury hotels in the Algarve now, but very few that feel genuinely different. Ombria does. Set in the hills just outside Loulé, it offers a side of the Algarve that many people forget exists — quieter, greener, and far removed from the busier coastal resorts the region is usually known for. For me, Ombria was always something in the distance. I grew up on the hill opposite and watched it slowly take shape over the years, so there was always curiosity around what it would eventually become — and whether a development of this scale could actually sit comfortably within the landscape around it. What they’ve created works remarkably well. Rather than trying to compete with the coastline, Ombria leans fully into its surroundings. The views, the space and the natural landscape are what define the experience here, and from the moment you arrive, the atmosphere feels noticeably calmer. Not quiet in a dull sense — just calmer. And in the Algarve, that’s surprisingly rare. VICEROY OMBRIA A DIFFERENT KIND OF LUXURY At the centre of the resort is the Viceroy hotel, the first Viceroy property in Portugal. The hotel brings a level of luxury and service you would expect from an international five-star brand, but without feeling formal or overdone. The architecture takes inspiration from traditional Algarvian villages, with terracotta tones, stone pathways and buildings that feel far more connected to the landscape than many modern resorts do. Nothing feels flashy for the sake of it. The suites and residences are spacious, understated and incredibly well designed, with large terraces, open views and interiors that feel refined without trying too hard. It’s the sort of place where you immediately slow down a little without even meaning to. GOLF WITH A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT FEEL The golf course has quickly become one of Ombria’s standout features, and even for people who don’t play golf regularly, it’s hard not to be impressed by the setting. Built directly into the valleys and hillsides, the course feels completely integrated into the landscape around it. There are panoramic views in almost every direction, and unlike some of the Algarve’s busier golf resorts, everything here feels far more open and relaxed. You don’t have rows of surrounding apartments or crowds moving around the course all day. It feels peaceful, spacious and properly thought through. THE SPA & WELLNESS SIDE OF OMBRIA One of the things Ombria does particularly well is creating spaces that actually feel relaxing. The spa and wellness areas follow the same approach as the rest of the resort — understated, calm and closely connected to the natural surroundings. There’s an indoor-outdoor feel throughout much of the resort, and whether it’s yoga sessions overlooking the hills, spa treatments or simply spending time by the pool, the atmosphere never feels rushed. After a day there, you realise how few places genuinely feel calm anymore. FOOD, WINE & THE ALGARVE The food offering reflects the same philosophy as the hotel itself: high quality, but still very connected to the Algarve. There’s a strong focus on seasonal ingredients, local produce and Portuguese influence, without making things overly complicated or formal. Long breakfasts overlooking the hills, relaxed lunches and evening dining all feel naturally part of the experience rather than staged for tourists. And like everything else at Ombria, it feels considered without trying too hard to impress. There are plenty of luxury hotels in the Algarve now, but very few that feel genuinely different. Ombria does.
OMBRIA 2 Rather than a fixed list of events, Ombria offers a natural flow of experiences throughout the year — things that feel aligned with the setting rather than added for the sake of it. Nature & Outdoor Living Guided walks, cycling routes, and time spent exploring the surrounding hills. The landscape isn’t just there to look at — it’s part of the experience. Wellbeing & Slow Moments Outdoor yoga, spa rituals, and wellness sessions set against open views. The kind that make you properly switch off, even if you didn’t realise you needed to. Food, Wine & Local Flavours Seasonal dining, wine tastings, and curated culinary experiences that reflect the Algarve’s heritage — elevated, but never overdone. Workshops & Cultural Experiences Smaller, more considered sessions — from local crafts to creative workshops — offering a more meaningful connection to the region. Why It Stays With You What Ombria does well isn’t one single thing — it’s how everything comes together. It feels calm without being quiet. Considered without being overdone. And different, without trying to be. You leave feeling like you’ve properly switched off — which, more often than not, is the whole point. Planning Ahead Experiences change with the seasons, so it’s worth seeing what’s coming up before you go. WHAT’S HAPPENING AT OMBRIA
