Monica's: Hospitality Built on Family

1 min readThe First Edition

From Vale do Lobo to Salir, the family behind three much-loved Algarve restaurants.

For Monica and Luís, hospitality has never been about trends or polished concepts. It has always been about creating places where people feel comfortable, welcomed and genuinely looked after. Today, the family runs three much-loved Algarve restaurants — Monica’s Restaurant in Vale do Lobo, Janela da Serra in Salir and A Villa — but their story began long before that, shaped by years working across Portugal, England and beyond. After building successful careers in hospitality abroad, the couple returned to the Algarve in 2012 to raise their children closer to family and the lifestyle they had grown up with. What followed was not a carefully planned brand, but a collection of restaurants built slowly through consistency, hard work and loyal returning customers. Over the years, Monica’s has become a place people return to for long lunches, relaxed dinners and traditional Sunday roasts — drawn not only by the food, but by the atmosphere that Monica and Luís have created around it. Family remains at the centre of everything they do. Mothers, brothers, nephews and extended family members are all involved across the businesses, alongside staff who have worked with them for many years. That sense of familiarity and continuity is part of what keeps customers coming back. Their food reflects the same philosophy — generous, homemade and influenced by both Portuguese traditions and the places they have lived and worked over the years. In an industry often driven by visibility and trends, Monica and Luís have taken a quieter approach, focusing simply on creating restaurants people genuinely enjoy returning to.
