In the heart of Albufeira, set along the beachfront with uninterrupted sea views, Louisiana Restaurant is far more than a place to dine—it’s a story of love, resilience, and family that has shaped one of the Algarve’s most enduring restaurants. Founded in 1985 by José António Moita Dias and Teresa Anne Coffey Moita Dias, Louisiana began with a love story that started in the United States in 1975. The couple met, fell in love, and married within months—a decision that would define everything that followed. Years later, they held a Catholic wedding in Epsom, surrounded by family who didn’t yet know they were already married. The name “Louisiana” is a tribute to where it all began. Their life together spanned countries and cultures. José, a musician, performed across Europe before moving to San Francisco to pursue his dream, while Teresa worked in banking. They later settled in Paris, where their daughter Sophie Ana was born in 1984. Following Teresa’s illness, the family returned to Portugal in search of stability and support.
With the help of both families, Louisiana was born—a warm, lively restaurant filled with music, energy, and togetherness.
José played most evenings, creating an atmosphere that was as much about experience as it was about food. While the name reflects its American roots, the menu has evolved into a well-rounded offering, with premium grilled meats, fresh seafood, and comforting, flavour-led dishes that appeal to a wide range of guests—all enjoyed against the backdrop of the ocean just steps away. But just a year after opening, tragedy struck when José passed away in a car accident. Despite this, Teresa carried on with remarkable strength, raising Sophie while building Louisiana into a beloved local institution. After her passing in 1998, her brother Joseph stepped in, becoming both Sophie’s guardian and the guiding force behind the business, preserving its spirit while preparing Sophie for the future. After completing her education in England, Sophie returned and took over the restaurant in 2016. A year later, Joseph walked her down the aisle at her wedding—a reflection of the deep family ties behind Louisiana. When he passed away in 2018, the team travelled to England to honour him, a testament to the loyalty and sense of family he had created. Today, Louisiana continues under Sophie’s leadership, with her own family now part of its daily life. Rooted in warmth, authenticity, and a true sense of belonging, it remains a place where generations come together. In a region that is constantly evolving, Louisiana stands as something rare—a place where history is lived, not just remembered, and where every meal is served with a view, a story, and a legacy that continues to unfold.
